Heating and cooling in Mehlville, MO needs a question about fuel before anything else. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey shows 60 percent of occupied homes heating with utility gas and 37 percent with electricity, a much larger electric share than the county's 23 percent. Kenan Corporation reaches Mehlville in about 55 minutes from our base near Spanish Lake in normal traffic. We say that up front, because a drive this long should be matched by a clear picture of the job.
Calls that match Mehlville's 1969 median home
Seven kinds of work follow Mehlville's subdivisions and apartment buildings.

Heat Pump Repair
Electricity heats 37 percent of occupied Mehlville homes, far above the county's 23 percent, so frozen outdoor coils and failed defrost boards are a regular winter call.

AC Replacement
Mehlville's median home dates to 1969, and a split system installed in the 1990s or 2000s is now 20 to 30 years old and near the end of the usual 15 to 20 year range.

Furnace Repair
Sixty percent of occupied homes here heat with gas, so igniters, flame sensors and draft problems on 1960s and 1970s furnaces make up a large share of cold-weather visits.
Learn more →
Refrigerant Leak Repair
Condensers installed before about 2010 may use R-22, which has not been produced since 2020, so a coil leak on one calls for an honest repair-or-replace conversation.

Commercial HVAC Maintenance
About 3,000 Mehlville units sit in apartment buildings of 5 to 19 units and another 1,100 in larger ones, where managers want scheduled filter, coil and drain checks.

AC Repair
With 4,236 homes built in the 1960s and 2,569 in the 1970s, a 25-year-old split that quits in July is often a capacitor, contactor or fan motor, and repair beats replacement when the compressor is sound.

Heat Pump Installation
Because 37 percent of occupied homes here already run on electricity, owners replacing resistance heat or an old air handler can compare a heat pump quote against Ameren's 2026 chart.

Gas homes, electric homes and the 1960s subdivision
The ACS counts 13,994 housing units, with a median year of 1969. Of those, 4,236 were built in the 1960s, 2,569 in the 1970s and 2,278 in the 1950s, and only 186 predate 1940. That is a classic south county pattern: split-levels, ranches and two-stories on curving streets, plus apartment buildings and townhomes in between.
The fuel split matters in repair. A gas furnace usually fails at an igniter, flame sensor or inducer. An electric or heat pump home fails at defrost controls, contactors or a strip heater, and our heat pump repair page explains each. Fifty-nine percent of units are detached houses, 22 percent sit in buildings of 5 to 19 apartments, and 34 percent of occupied units are rented.
Mehlville is also a mailing label as much as a boundary. It spans three ZIP codes, 63125, 63128 and 63129, and the Mehlville Fire Protection District covers Sunset Hills, Green Park and other nearby places. Confirm your parcel's jurisdiction before assuming county rules.
With 37 percent of homes electric, Ameren Missouri's 2026 chart is worth reading before replacing electric heat. It pays $2,000 per system for air-source heat pumps at 15.2 SEER2 or better where a home replaces electric resistance heat, has no central system or goes dual-fuel. Paperwork must go through an Ameren participating contractor, the chart expires December 31, 2026, and Kenan Corporation does not claim that status.

Planning a trip to the south end of the county
Call with the street, the building type and the symptom. Expect a diagnosis before any part is swapped, a plain explanation of what failed and a clear, upfront quote before work begins. Tell us if the system is gas, electric or a heat pump, since that decides which parts and tools make the trip.

Our heat pump vs furnace guide helps when a replacement is on the table, and the gas inspection guide matters because Spire serves most homes here.
Split-level lower levels: furnace, water heater and sump in one room
Many 1960s and 1970s south county split-levels keep the furnace, water heater and sump pit together on the lowest level. That puts two gas appliances in one room, so combustion air and flue clearance matter whenever a furnace is replaced. A new unit that fits the old footprint is not automatically one that vents correctly.
Condensate is the other issue. An AC coil, and any high-efficiency furnace, drips water that has to reach a floor drain or a condensate pump. A failed pump or clogged line shuts a system off, or floods the lower level on a humid day. Ask the technician to check the drain route on every cooling visit, and see our AC repair page for what else a summer call covers.
Permits and the Lemay Ferry Road corridor
With no city hall of its own, Mehlville falls under St. Louis County for building permits, and the county's transportation and public works department also licenses mechanical contractors. Installing, altering or replacing a furnace, AC or duct system requires a permit. Ask any contractor, including us, for the county license number, and have the quote name who pulls the permit.
Mehlville High School and the fire district's House 1 both sit on Lemay Ferry Road, and Cliff Cave County Park and Willmore Park are common reference points. Ameren Missouri and Spire are the utilities. For summer calls, see AC replacement.

Learn more →Heating and Cooling in Mehlville: common questions
Does a Mehlville mailing address mean St. Louis County handles my permits?
Not always. Mehlville is unincorporated, so county rules apply there, but a Mehlville mailing address or fire district can reach into nearby incorporated places such as Sunset Hills and Green Park. Check which jurisdiction your parcel sits in before work starts, and ask the contractor to confirm who issues the permit.
Why does my heat pump ice over in Mehlville winters?
Some frost on an outdoor coil is normal, because a heat pump runs a defrost cycle. A coil that stays iced for hours, or a unit that blows cool air indoors, points to a failed defrost board, sensor, low charge or poor airflow. Turn off the unit if ice builds on the lines and call before a compressor is damaged.
Is it normal for a south county AC from the 1990s to need replacing?
Yes. Contractor sources put central AC life at roughly 15 to 20 years with routine care, and the ACS puts Mehlville's median home at 1969, so many systems here are already second generation. We check the compressor, coil and charge first, and we recommend replacement only when repair no longer makes sense.
Do you work on apartment buildings around Mehlville?
Yes, Kenan Corporation lists light commercial HVAC, and managers of small and mid-size apartment buildings can ask for scheduled checks of condensers, filters and drains. About 3,000 Mehlville units are in buildings of 5 to 19 apartments. Tell us the unit count and equipment types so we can say what fits.
How long is the drive from your base to Mehlville?
About 55 minutes in normal traffic, because Mehlville is at the opposite end of the county from our base near Spanish Lake. We are open 24 hours and offer same-day service when the schedule allows. Call early, give the nearest cross street such as Lemay Ferry Road, and ask for an honest timeframe.

The best in the business!!! So nice, great communication, quick and straight to the point. I can’t recommend Kenan enough!!!
Kenna did an amazing job! I had another company come out and told me I needed a new furnace because my heat was not coming on. Previous company said could be the motor/fan and that would cost $650, which I was ok with. They didn’t check any parts, but was ready to say I should just get a new heating and cooling unit. I knew my neighbor had service done by Kenyan and said he did a great job. He came out and found it was a capacitor that was causing the issue and fixed it. He is awesome and definitely if I need help again, he will be called and I will use his services!
