Heating and Cooling in Arnold, MO

Heating and cooling in Arnold, MO is a drive of about 1 hour from our base near Spanish Lake in normal traffic, 33 miles south into Jefferson County. Most of Arnold's homes were standing by 2000, so aging furnaces and older air conditioners define the work.

Arnold is the largest community in Jefferson County, and it has hardly changed in size for 40 years. Census figures show 19,141 residents in 1980 and 20,858 in 2020. We reach it in about 1 hour from our Broadhead Lane base in normal traffic, so call first.

Why the Arnold housing stock leans on aging equipment

There were 7,913 housing units in Arnold in 2000 and 8,847 in 2020. Roughly nine in ten of today's homes were already standing in 2000. That is a different market than a growth suburb. Few new homes bring new equipment, so most calls involve furnaces and air conditioners that have run for decades.

Single-story ranch homes often keep their furnace and ducts close to the foundation.

Contractor sources put typical equipment life at 15-20 years. In a place with this much older housing, the useful skill is knowing what is still worth fixing.

Where the Meramec and Mississippi change the picture

Arnold sits near the point where the Meramec meets the Mississippi. The Meramec crested at a record 47.26 feet on December 31, 2015, affecting more than 300 homes, and again at 45.62 feet on May 3, 2017, affecting about 20. Equipment that stood in water is a safety question first and a comfort question second.

After a Meramec crest: four steps before the power comes back

An Arnold homeowner whose basement took in river water should treat the furnace, water heater and electrical panel as unsafe until checked. The December 2015 crest reached more than 300 homes, so this is a real planning question here.

  1. Stay out of a flooded basement while the panel or outlets could still be live.
  2. Leave the gas valves alone. If you smell gas, go outside and call 911 or Spire's St. Louis line at 800-887-4173.
  3. Do not restart the furnace to dry it out.
  4. Call for an inspection of the gas valve, control board and wiring before power or gas returns.

When a replacement follows, ask whether a condenser pad can sit higher than the old one.

Is a 1990s Arnold air conditioner worth another refrigerant top-up?

Not usually, once a leak is involved. R-22 production ended on January 1, 2020, so service on those systems depends on reclaimed or stockpiled supply, and a leak repair can get expensive. New split systems built since January 2025 use a refrigerant under 700 GWP, usually R-454B or R-32. Get the leak repair quoted next to a replacement quote before you decide. If the coil is sound and the leak is small, a repair can still buy good seasons.

A visit from Spanish Lake down to Arnold

You call, we describe the schedule, and a technician diagnoses before replacing anything. The quote is clear, upfront and in writing before work starts. On a furnace that has served for 25 years, our job is to explain what is wrong, what a repair buys and what replacement would involve.

Selling or renting in Arnold: the existing-structure inspection

The City of Arnold requires an existing-structure inspection when a house is sold or a new tenant moves in. Its permit page does not say whether a furnace or AC repair falls under it, so call the Building department at 636-282-2378 before closing and ask. If a heating or cooling problem turns up, get the repair quote in writing first. Only contractors licensed by the City may work in Arnold, and the City asks for a business license from the City Clerk and proof of insurance.

Permits, Jefferson College and I-55 landmarks

Arnold has its own Building and Code Compliance Division, which Harbor Compliance's guide lists as the issuer of a City of Arnold contractor license. Ask it about permits, and ask any contractor for the license number the city expects. Electric and gas bills carry the utility name, and Ameren's 2026 rebates reach only Ameren customers. Spire lists Jefferson County in its service area, with address-level checks. For jobs here, see furnace repair and AC replacement. The Jefferson College campus on Missouri State Road and I-55 are good landmarks on the phone, and so are Arnold City Park, at 68 acres, and the 25-acre Ferd B. Lang Park in central Arnold. For shops and offices, the light commercial repair page applies.

Heating and Cooling in Arnold: common questions

Is Arnold too far for you to come from Spanish Lake?

It is a longer drive, about 1 hour and 33 miles in normal traffic, but we do come to Arnold. Call first and describe the problem so we can say where the schedule stands. We are open 24 hours, and we offer same-day service when the schedule allows.

Can a furnace or AC that sat in Meramec floodwater be saved?

Do not turn it on. Gas valves, control boards and wiring that were submerged generally need replacement rather than drying out, and the Meramec crested at 47.26 feet on December 31, 2015, reaching more than 300 homes. Have a technician inspect the system before power or gas is restored.

Who do I ask about an HVAC permit in Arnold?

Ask the City of Arnold's Building and Code Compliance Division, part of Community Development, whether your replacement needs a permit. Missouri has no statewide HVAC license, so also ask any contractor for the license number the city expects and put who pulls the permit in the written quote.

Kenna did an amazing job! I had another company come out and told me I needed a new furnace because my heat was not coming on. Previous company said could be the motor/fan and that would cost $650, which I was ok with. They didn’t check any parts, but was ready to say I should just get a new heating and cooling unit. I knew my neighbor had service done by Kenyan and said he did a great job. He came out and found it was a capacitor that was causing the issue and fixed it. He is awesome and definitely if I need help again, he will be called and I will use his services!
