Heating and cooling in Shrewsbury, MO covers more decades than most cities this small. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the median home at 1967, yet the single largest group of units, 694 of 3,261, went up in the 1980s. Kenan Corporation drives to Shrewsbury in about 45 minutes from our base near Spanish Lake in normal traffic, which is a real trip across the county. That is why a call here begins with a few questions about the building before anyone leaves.
Calls that start on the St. Louis city line
Shrewsbury borders the City of St. Louis, and its work follows three kinds of buildings: houses, condos and apartment blocks, and the cards below cover most calls.

AC Repair
About 750 Shrewsbury units are in buildings of 20 or more apartments, so condenser pads, shared drain lines and unit access shape every cooling call.

Heat Pump Repair
Roughly one in three occupied homes here heats with electricity, which means heat pumps and electric air handlers that freeze up or lose their defrost cycle.
Learn more →
Furnace Replacement
Shrewsbury houses from the 1950s and 1960s are now 60 to 75 years old, and a furnace there may be the second or third on the same ducts.

Commercial HVAC Maintenance
Managers of Shrewsbury's apartment buildings and small commercial spaces near Watson Road and Big Bend need filter, coil and drain checks on a calendar rather than after a complaint.
Learn more →
Duct Repair and Replacement
About 440 attached homes share walls, so duct runs are short, buried and hard to inspect, and a leak or crushed section often shows up as one stuffy bedroom.

Furnace Repair
With 65 percent of occupied Shrewsbury homes on Spire gas and a 1967 median build year, closet and basement furnaces usually need an igniter, flame sensor or blower motor before they need replacing.

AC Replacement
The 694 units built in the 1980s are the city's largest decade, so condo and townhome condensers from that era are near 40 years old, well past the 15 to 20 year contractor range.

Give the street, the type of building and what the system did. The technician diagnoses before replacing parts, explains the problem in plain language and gives a clear, upfront quote before work starts. For condos and apartments, mention who manages the building and where the equipment sits, because a locked mechanical room costs a trip.
The call is the best time to settle whether the visit can be same-day. We offer same-day service when the schedule allows, and with a 45-minute drive, a straight answer on the phone beats a guess.

Four decades of building in 1.44 square miles
Shrewsbury traces back to an 1889 plat and an 1890 railroad station to a village in 1913 and a 1938 City Hall, with growth in the 1960s and 1970s that brought parks, a pool and Interstate 44. The ACS adds the housing detail: 16 percent of units date to 1939 or earlier, 21 percent to the 1980s and 12 percent to the 1990s.
That makes three service profiles. The houses are mostly 1950s and 1960s gas-heat homes with basement or closet furnaces. The 1980s and 1990s units are condos and townhomes, often with short duct runs and heat pumps. The apartment buildings, about 750 units in properties of 20 or more, rely on rows of condensers and managed schedules. Census data shows 48.8 percent of Shrewsbury households are one person, so many units are small, and an oversized system there short-cycles and leaves the air damp.

Citywide, 65 percent of occupied homes heat with utility gas and 34 percent with electricity. For the price side of a replacement, our furnace replacement cost guide explains what changes the number, and heat pump vs furnace helps with the fuel choice.

Condo boards, shared pads and 1980s equipment
The 1980s are Shrewsbury's biggest building decade, with 694 units, so a good share of condo and townhome systems here were first installed around forty years ago. Most have been replaced at least once. Contractor sources put furnace, AC and heat pump life at roughly 15 to 20 years with routine care, so an original unit that still runs is borrowed time.
Before any replacement in a condo, read the declaration and bylaws. Boards often control where a condenser can sit, what it may look like and who pays for the line set. Ask the board in writing, then have the quote name the equipment, the pad location and who pulls the permit. If the compressor and coil are sound, repair stays on the table.
Permits and landmarks around 63119
Shrewsbury's City Center at 5200 Shrewsbury Avenue houses the Building and Housing Department, which takes permit questions at (314) 647-5795. The city's permit forms do not make clear whether mechanical permits come from the city or from St. Louis County, so ask before work starts and put the answer in the quote. Missouri has no statewide HVAC license, so ask any contractor, including us, for the license number the permit office accepts.
Big Bend Boulevard, Watson Road and the Shrewsbury-Lansdowne I-44 MetroLink station are the landmarks callers use. Ameren Missouri sells electricity here, and Spire delivers gas. Our heat pump repair and AC repair pages cover the most common service calls.

Learn more →Heating and Cooling in Shrewsbury: common questions
Is a heat pump a realistic choice for a Shrewsbury house with gas service?
It can be, usually as a dual-fuel system that keeps the gas furnace for the coldest days. Ameren Missouri's 2026 chart lists $2,000 per system for qualifying air-source heat pumps in dual-fuel cases, but only through a participating contractor, and only for 2026. Kenan Corporation does not claim that status, so confirm terms in writing.
Who issues a mechanical permit in Shrewsbury?
Call the Shrewsbury Building and Housing Department at City Hall, 5200 Shrewsbury Avenue, before work starts. The city's own forms point to a combined permit but also show mechanical work being handled elsewhere, and nearby cities route it to St. Louis County. Get the permit holder and license number into your written quote.
Is it worth repairing a 1960s furnace in Shrewsbury?
Often, if the failed part is an igniter, flame sensor or blower motor and the heat exchanger is sound. Contractor sources put furnace life at roughly 15 to 20 years with routine care, so a unit from the 1990s is past that range. We diagnose, explain the options and give a clear, upfront quote.
Can an apartment manager get several Shrewsbury units checked in one visit?
Yes, ask for a building visit instead of separate calls. Roughly 750 Shrewsbury units are in buildings of 20 or more apartments, so one trip can cover condensers, filters and condensate lines together. Tenant access and mechanical-room keys decide the schedule, and we do not promise an arrival window, so settle those details on the phone.
How far is Shrewsbury from your base near Spanish Lake?

The best in the business!!! So nice, great communication, quick and straight to the point. I can’t recommend Kenan enough!!!
Kenna did an amazing job! I had another company come out and told me I needed a new furnace because my heat was not coming on. Previous company said could be the motor/fan and that would cost $650, which I was ok with. They didn’t check any parts, but was ready to say I should just get a new heating and cooling unit. I knew my neighbor had service done by Kenyan and said he did a great job. He came out and found it was a capacitor that was causing the issue and fixed it. He is awesome and definitely if I need help again, he will be called and I will use his services!
