Heating and Cooling in Ferguson, MO

Heating and cooling in Ferguson covers two very different houses: Victorian and Craftsman homes in Old Ferguson West and 1950s ranches on the blocks around them. Kenan Corporation reaches ZIP 63135 in about 20 minutes from our base near Spanish Lake in normal traffic.

Victorian frame houses with deep porches on a tree-lined street in an older north St. Louis County neighborhood

Ferguson sits about 20 minutes from our base near Spanish Lake in normal traffic, and its housing is the reason a call here is never routine. The settlement grew around a Wabash Railroad depot in 1855, and the 2020 census counted 18,527 residents. Century-old frame houses stand a few blocks from postwar brick, so one street may need a boiler visit and the next a furnace igniter. We are open 24 hours and offer same-day service when the schedule allows.

Old Ferguson West houses and 1950s ranches wear out differently

St. Louis Magazine describes Old Ferguson West as about 850 homes, including Victorian "century" houses, Craftsman homes and a Sears kit house. Those houses were built before central air existed. Cooling ducts went in later through closets, attics and chases, and the runs are often short on airflow. When one upstairs room never cools, suspect the duct path before the condenser.

Houses built before central air often gained their cooling equipment decades later.

Point2Homes puts the city's median year built at 1957. A ranch from that era is usually on its second or third furnace, and contractor sources commonly cite 15 to 20 years for furnaces and air conditioners with routine maintenance. Repair is often the sensible call at that point, and we lean that way on equipment with years left in it.

If replacement is the right answer, ask about the flue. Swapping an old flue-vented furnace for a high-efficiency model usually changes the venting, and a masonry chimney that served a 1920s boiler may no longer be the right path.

Maline Creek, Dade Avenue and the Old Ferguson West grid

St. Louis Magazine places Old Ferguson West between Dade Avenue, Airport Road, Florissant Road and Maline Creek, a compact grid where many houses stand a short walk from the creek. For a basement furnace or boiler in a low-lying block, the practical questions are where the condensate drains and whether the floor drain still works. A high-efficiency furnace makes condensate, and a pump or drain that backs up after heavy rain will shut the furnace down.

Furnace Repair

A 1950s ranch is usually on its second or third furnace, so igniter, flame sensor and blower faults come up first, and a small-part repair is often the right call on a unit that still burns cleanly.

Boiler Service

Century-era houses in Old Ferguson West may still heat with hot water or steam, which needs a boiler check and an eye on the radiator valves, not a furnace call.

Duct Repair and Replacement

Ducts added to Victorian houses after the fact squeeze through closets and chases, and the joints leak. Sealing and rerouting a run can fix the upstairs room that never cools.

Furnace Replacement

Replacing an older flue-vented furnace with a high-efficiency unit changes the venting, which matters in chimney-era houses where a masonry flue once served a 1920s boiler.

AC Repair

Condensers on 1950s ranches have often outlived their first compressor and show it with short cycling and warm air, so the repair quote is worth comparing with a replacement quote.

Furnace Maintenance

Point2Homes puts Ferguson's median build year at 1957, so many furnaces here are in the 15-to-20-year window where a fall flue, burner and heat exchanger check catches problems before a cold night.

Repair or replace in Old Ferguson and the 1950s ranches

Angi's 2026 average for a full HVAC replacement in St. Louis is $7,133, a market figure rather than our quote, and an older Ferguson house can add work that average does not show, such as a flue that no longer suits a new furnace or ducts added decades after the house was built. Ask for the repair price and the replacement price side by side, with those extras listed, before you commit to either. Landlords have an added step: the city's Residential Rental License is separate from any permit for the work.

After you call from 63135

Describe the symptom and how old the equipment is. The technician drives out, diagnoses before replacing parts, explains the fault in plain language and gives you a clear, upfront quote before work starts. After a repair, we check what else on the system is working.

Code Compliance, Church Street and the old depot

Ferguson's City Hall is on Church Street, and the Code Compliance office there takes mechanical permit questions at (314) 521-7721. The installing contractor pulls the permit, so make sure your written quote says who does. The city's page does not describe a contractor license, so ask any contractor, including us, for the license number that applies in Ferguson.

South Florissant Road is the main route through town, and the former Wabash depot beside the Norfolk Southern line is the landmark people use. Our furnace repair and boiler service pages cover the two jobs older Ferguson houses call about most.

Heating and Cooling in Ferguson: common questions

Does replacing a furnace in Ferguson need a city permit?

Yes, plan on one. Ferguson's permits page says mechanical work falls under its Construction Permit, handled by Code Compliance through an online portal. The page does not describe a contractor license, so call Code Compliance at (314) 521-7721 to confirm, and get the permit line written into your quote.

Can a Victorian house in Old Ferguson West get central air without tearing out plaster?

Often, yes, but the route depends on the house. Short duct runs through closets and attics can serve upstairs rooms, and a ductless unit can cover a room that has no practical duct path. A technician has to look at the framing first, then you get options with a clear, upfront quote.

How far is the Broadhead Lane shop from Ferguson?

About 20 minutes in normal traffic to ZIP 63135, so Ferguson is one of our shorter calls. We are open 24 hours and offer same-day service when the schedule allows. That is a scheduling statement, not a promised arrival time.

Is it worth repairing an older furnace in a Ferguson ranch house?

Usually, if the fault is a small part. An igniter, flame sensor or blower capacitor is a modest repair on a furnace that still burns cleanly. A cracked heat exchanger is different, because that is a safety problem and the case for replacement gets strong. The diagnosis decides it, and you hear the reasoning before any work starts.

Kenna did an amazing job! I had another company come out and told me I needed a new furnace because my heat was not coming on. Previous company said could be the motor/fan and that would cost $650, which I was ok with. They didn’t check any parts, but was ready to say I should just get a new heating and cooling unit. I knew my neighbor had service done by Kenyan and said he did a great job. He came out and found it was a capacitor that was causing the issue and fixed it. He is awesome and definitely if I need help again, he will be called and I will use his services!
